Soledad Canyon, (4-days) 28th – 31st May
The “TT” preserve about ten miles south of Palmdale, CA. Dry and hot, all the grass was dead. Got in the hi 90s, was not the place to be in the summer time
Rancho Oso, (10-days) 1st – 9th June
A “NACO” preserve in the mountain, twenty miles north of Santa Barbara. No sun for the first three or four days, then it came out around noon. Went to Santa Barbara. Barbara came down to the long weekend. Had some nice horse trails in the mountains around the preserve. Saw some turkeys and deer’s around the area.
Pismo State Beach, (2-days) 10th & 11th June
Weather was cool (40s-50/60s), overcast all day, no sun. It was nice for running on the beach. Went fishing on the pier, catch half a bucket of sardines but gave then away.
Morro Bay State Beach, (3-days) 12th, 13th & 14th June
Weather like Pismo, no sun. Went fishing two days, wind was blowing hard and didn’t catch any.
Salinas, Wal-Mart (2-day) 15th & 16th June
Worked on the RV, changed the plugs, rotor cap, plug wires, it took all day to change them
Santa Benito, (2-days) 17th & 18th June
A “TT” preserve twelve miles south of Hollister, Ca. Cell phone had some problems. Weather was mostly sunny, cool in the morning (50s) and warmed up in the afternoon (80s), very dry in the preserve.
Morgan Hill, (3-days) 19th, 20th & 21st June
A “TT” preserve four miles west of Morgan Hill, CA. The weather was like it was in Santa Benito, dry and in the (50s-70s). Went to Monterey Bay area on Thursday. Had lunch with Ron O’Brien on Friday. At Mass, Jerry and Norm from St. Ann were there.
Windsor, (2-day) 22nd & 23rd June
A “NACO” preserve at Windsor, CA. Weather was cool and overcast, very little sun. Meet a couple from Ridge Manor, the Smokers (Sandi and Tony). Had to run around the Preserve three or four times.
Russian River, (1-day) 24th June
A “NACO” preserve is three miles north Cloverdale, CA. This preserve is hilly, and the temp got up to 95 in the middle of the afternoon. The morning was cooler (50s). The river was low, but the water was cool. Got a good work out running up and down the hills for my morning run.
Redwood Trails, (1-day) 25th June
This a RPI park north of Trinidad, CA. This is a RPI park, just off of US 101, the weather was cool (40s-60s). Meet up with the Smokers, and had supper with them. There were elks in the pasture next to the RV-park.
South Jetty, (3-days) 26th, 27th & 28th June
A “NACO” preserve two miles south of Florence OR. It is about three miles for the beach. Took a ride to the beach (South Jetty State Beach), it was overcast and windy, so windy that the sand as getting in your eyes. Had to run in the preserve. The Weather was windy the next day when I went to the North Jetty, yes the wind was still blowing hard there too. In town it was not that bad, walked around the marina and old town.
Whalers Rest, (2-days) 29th & 30th June
A “LTR” preserve is about four miles south of Newport, OR. It is just off of US 101 next to the beach. The weather was cloudy but looked like it would let the sun brake through, but it didn’t. Misting the morning I left. It was in the low 50s for my run on the beach, the wind was from the south and wet, the tide was out, that made for a large beach for running.
Pacific City, (2-days) 1st & 2nd July
A “TT” Preserve two miles north of Pacific City, OR. Just a short walk to the beach, weather was cool (40s-60s) the sun was out all day long, was able to see the first sun set on this trip. Had a good run on the beach, light wind from the North. Had lunch with Ron O’Brien in Salem OR.
Long Beach, (1-day) 3rd July
A “NACO” preserve about a mile north of Long Beach, WA. The beach is maybe 200 yd for the motor home, the weather is, hi 50s low 60s in the daytime. Lots of sun, no clouds, light winds. Overcast for my morning run (4th July)
Oceana, (1-day) 4th July
A “LTR” preserve north of Ocean City, WA. The weather was cool in the morning (mid 40s) and in the 60s in the daytime. The fireworks was great, lots along the beach, just after sun set it seem that everyone on the beach had some. Then at 10pm the city of Ocean City put on theirs. It lasted to for 30 minutes. Could sit inside the motor home and see them.
Cascade, (2-days) 5th & 6th July + (1-day) 11 July
A “LTR” preserve west of Snoqualmie WA. The weather looked like it would rain when I arrived at 11 or so, but then the sun came out making it a beautiful day (low 70s). The second day was just as nice. Went for a train ride from Snoqualmie Depot to North Bend, stop then went back past the Snoqualmie Depot to the Snoqualmie Fall, stop for a look over the Valley then back to the Snoqualmie Depot. The train ride took just over a hour. Then went to the Snoqualmie Falls and took some pictures.
Got a call from Barbara, her Mom died today. Called Cinda to change the ticket she sent for Barbara last week to fly out on Tuesday the 8th of July. Got her ticket changed to fly into LaGuardia and had Cinda get myself one Tuesday also, but to fly out of Seattle to LaGuardia. The flights were OK, I got in earlier then Barbara, so Laurie and JR picked me up and went back to Laurie’s and dropped JR off, then went back to pick up Barbara. The funeral was on Thursday so I fly back to Seattle on Friday.
While I was gone, the motor home was in dry storage. Friday when I returned, got the motor home out of storage and into a space(#113 at LTR(Cascade) for the night.
Mount Vernon, (1 day) 12th July
A “TT” preserve north of Mount Vernon about ten miles. Went to Mass in Mount Vernon Saturday night. The Weather was warmer in the daytime, just nice to sleeping with the windows open. Got a call from Gene Hart, he was going to the air show in Arlington about twenty-five miles south of where I was. Returned his call in the early afternoon when I arrived in Arlington, but he and his son, Joe were just leaving the Air show. We meet up in Safeway park lot then went to Denney’s to get some lunch. Weather was getting hot at the air show and most of the flying was over for the day.
Sunday, went to Anacortes to check on the ferry to the San Juan Islands for a day trip, Tuesday when I get back in to the area. Then, Called Ron Thomson and had a visit with Kio and Ron and I went to the Chief Club for brunch. The weather on Whidbey Island was nice and cool (overcast).
Birch Bay, (1 day) 13th July
The weather was overcast when I arrived, then it started sprinkling early evening. By morning it was real wet. It looked like it was not going to be a good. Left for La Conner in the overcast, but looked like there was so breakup to the West
La Conner, (1 day) 14th July
A “TT” preserve on the Skagit Bay. Got there early, plugged in the electric and left for the San Juan ferry. The ferry pulled out at 8:35 for Friday Harbor. The weather was cool and was not raining; the sky broke and was a very nice day. Arrived at Friday Harbor at 9:40, walked out to the airport and back. The town was larger then I had expected it would be. Got sometime to eat, and then boarded another ferry at 11:40 for the island of Orcas. The ferry arrived a little after 12. I got off and went ashore to the Orcas Hotel, and sat on the porch overlooking the harbor. The Ferry that would take me back to Anacortes came and was boarded, but it took longer to load the auto so it departed late about fifteen minuets, the next stop was at the island Shaw, loaded a hand full of folks and maybe four auto. It departed maybe ten minuets late. The next stop was the island Lopez, the loading of two autos and one walk-on, so it departed on time and the trip back to Anacortes was on time.
Went to Mount Vernon to pick up a sleeping bag and air mattress. It was a full day, was tired. Departed the preserve early to make the long trip to Crescent Bar.
Crescent Bar, (2 days) 15th, 16th July
A “LTR” resort next to the Columbia River near Quincy Wa. The weather is much warmer; it was in the 90s by mid afternoon. Took off early, 4:45am for Sand Point so I could have breakfast with Briana. Got there about 8:45 and it was only five minuets when Sandy and Briana pulled up. Briana showed the way to Connie’s Café for breakfast . We took our time eating and then went to Sandy’s shop. Then I took Briana to her house, it was ten miles or so for the main road. She showed me the house and then I headed back to Spokane where I was to meet up with Mike and Betty. Arrived at their home at 12 or so. Visited for 2 and half hours. Headed back West on I-90, returned to the motor home at 5: 15 or so. Left early AM, about 1:45 or so. The trip down to Bend was outstanding, could see the mountains, Hood, Rainer, Adams, Jefferson all at the same time, just awesome.
Bend (1 day) 17th July
A “TT” preserve south of Bend-Sunriver about 13 miles. The weather is like it was in Crescent Bar. The preserve has allot of things do.
Lake Minden(storage)18th July
A “NACO” preserve north of Sacramento CA. The weather was hot, was able to wash the motor home before putting it into storage until I could return after my trip to Oshkosh/NY.
Returned to Ridgecrest to get ready for the trip to Oshkosh, WI., Late, late in the day/night of 18th July.
Oshkosh/NY trip (four weeks)
Began on July the 24th at 4:15 am from IYK (Inyokern, CA). From IYK (4:15AM) > DLT (Delta, UT) gas stop, > GLT (Gillette WY) about 12:45. Stay in Gillette over night. Note: The weather was good for the most part. Early, before the daylight we did see some lighting from a thunderstorm north of our flight path, Owens Valley.
Called Aunt Hilda to see if she would be able to have lunch with us, she said yes so I said I would call her about 11 or so the let her know when we would be there. Leaving Gillette on 25th of July at 7:45AM, flew over to the Devil Tower (the mountain in the movie “Close encounters of the third kind”), then back on course. After Ron calculated for the runway and temperature at the airport in Gregory SD I Called Aunt Hilda just after 11 and said we would not stop for lunch because the runway was not long enough for the high temperature (was 100 degrees) they were having. So we flew on and landing at AUT(Austin, MN) at 11:50 AM (mountain time) or 12:50(central time). At AUT we gassed and stay over night. There was a strong wind and a storm later in the evening. Note: the weather was just hot, but was OK for the flight.
The next morning, 26th July, we check the weather channel at the hotel, it did not look good, thunderstorms. After going to the airport and checking weather it looked like it would be OK to OSK(Oshkosh WI). The visibility was decreasing the further east we went. We had no problems with the approach flying into OSK, Ron did real good. After parking (in a row with eight other planes) we setup the tent for our stay there. We arrived on Saturday; the show did not start until Tuesday. But we were able to walk around the airport and see all the people setting up their booths. I think it was on Sunday or Monday that a bad storm blew so hard it we had to take down the tarp. The storm did some damage to allot of the tents. We were lucky, the inside of the tent did get wet but we were able to get it dry before dark. It rain most every afternoon or it seem like it did. The air show the first day Tuesday was the best, there were so many airplanes in the air at on time (maybe 60 or 70). They did a great job with controlling all the planes, some were landing and some were taking off and some were flying in front of the people. Ron had a radio that we could
Leaving OSK on August the first, we had to head south not over the lake because of the thunderstorms over the lake. It would take maybe an hour or more longer to reach Newburgh. Well, we landed in Bradford for gas and to stay the night. Well it was 28 miles to town so we jumped back in plane and flew to Elmira NY where the hotel was just across the runway. Flying out of Elmira by early afternoon after checking the weather for three miles visibility. Getting to Stuart (Newburgh), Ron checked the weather at New Haven, it looked good so he jump back in the airplane and flew off.
Aug 2, - Aug 17, stayed at Laurie.
Aug 16, Aug., Ron flew to Newburg to stay the night for a early morning flight back to the west coast. Early on the 17th, we went to the airport and loaded the plane, but the weather was not VFR so we went for breakfast and when we got back to the airport the weather had improved so we got airborne.
Flying south of Lake Erie near Cleveland and on a path that will bring us over Lake Michigan north of Chicago. We could see large aircraft on the approach to O’Hare or Chicago Midway airports above our flight path. As we approach their flight path but lower the plane was hit with one of the wingtip vortices that shook us violently like we were hit with a hammer. We flew on and landing at AUT(Austin, MN) to gas and stay overnight.
Aug 18, Aug., We flew west to Rapid City for fuel and then back into the air flying just east of Mont Rushmore was able to take a picture but too far off to be very clear. We fly into Rock Springs WY for gas and stay the night.
Aug 19, Aug., It was an early morning, we needed to get airborne before the weather got too hot, the airport was at high altitude and we were heave. There farther west and then heading south we ran into strong head winds. Our ground speed was very low as we approached the Inyo Mountains could we make the Inyokern airport or would we have to refuel in Bishop or Lone Pine? Ron figured that Lone Pine A/P would be our fuel stop. The wind was blowing sand all up and down the Owens Valley as we took off for the last leg of the trip. We landed at IYK(Inyokern, CA.), home again…
Sep 17th I drove the blazer back to where the RV was storage at TTN-Lake Minder and put it on a site and set it up.
Lake Minder, (4-days) 17th – 21st Sept.
A “NACO” preserve north of Sacramento CA. The weather was still warm but not as hot as it was in late July when I was here before. Drove into Maryville to shop for food, didn’t have anything in the motor home.
Lake of the Spring, (3- days) 21st - 24th Sept.
A “TT” preserve near the town of Oregon House, CA. The weather was nice. Changed the kitchen sink faucet out, if would not shut off. Lots of dears in the preserve along with turkey hens. It was hilly, so the morning run was a good work out.
Snowflower, (3-days) 24th - 27th Sept.
A “NACO” preserve just off of I-80 near Donner Pass. The temp was in the mid to low 50s at night and 80s in the daytime. Jerry and Norm was there, what a surprise, they were heading back to Ridgecrest by way of Glass Creek.
Yosemite Lakes, (4-days) 27th Sept. – 1st Oct.
A “NACO” preserve five miles west of Yosemite NF. It was very smoky from fires in the area. By Sunday evening the smoke had clear, but by Monday morning the smoke was back but not as bad. It was about 45 degrease.
Yosemite National Park,(2-days)1st , 2nd Oct
Camped at “Porcupine Flat” in the high sierra country, weather was in the upper 20s at night and 50s to low 60s in the daytime. Hiked to “May Lake” one day and took a ride to the “Yosemite Valley” the next day to take some pictures, also hiked to the “Tuolumne Grove” with giant Sequoia near “Crane Flat”.
Inyo National Forest, (8 days)3rd – 10th Oct
Camped at “Glass Creek” campground, in the high sierra country, about half way between June lake and Mammoth Lakes, Ca. The weather was mostly in the 30s at night and 60 to 70s in the daytime. Did some hiking, “Obsidian Dome”, “Lookout Mountain”, “Inyo Craters” and a trip to Mammoth Lakes.
Inyo National Forest, 11th Oct
Camped at “Shady Rest” campground, in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. The weather was warmer then in Glass Creek.
Bishop, CA. (2 days)12th Oct
Camped at Browntown Camp Ground south of town. Went to Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains east of Bishop, Ca. Hiked a trail at Schulman Grove of Ancient Bristlecone Pines, some that had lived as long ago as 5 to 6 thousand years old. The weather was much warmer, 60s at night and 80s was the daytime temps.
BLM, Goodale Creek,(4 days) 14th Oct
The Goodale Creek campground is about 15 miles south of Big Pine and west of hwy 395. Went fishing in Owen River, Tinemaha Reservoir and the ponds near Bishop for bass but did not have any luck. Try fly-fishing for trout in the Big Pine Creek but the luck was the same as the bass. The weather was nice, in the high 50s at night and upper 70s, low 80s.
BLM, Tuttle Creek, (10 days)18th – 28th Oct
The Tuttle Creek campground is about 4 miles west of Lone Pine, Ca above the Alabama Hill. The trout were biting, in Independence, Tuttle, and Lone Pine Creeks caught maybe 12 to 14 small and in Lone Pine Creek caught one at 2 and a quarter pounds. Try for bass again in the ponds east of hwy 395 and north of Independence, California with no luck, the water was low. The weather was nice for the most part until the last two or three days when the wind picked up.
