From Margie:

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!

This has been a good year for me. My health is still very good, I still have my part-time job with Duane at his stores and stay active with my place.

Due to the cold weather last year my orange crop is pretty poor but I’m thankful that Thomas McCarthy will be able to get a crew to pick what I have and I’m hopeful to get enough to pay the property taxes. With the help of my family we replanted some trees and they all are looking good.

Let’s hope the economy will start to improve and those without jobs will be able to find something permanent. My three older Grandsons (Chris, Bret & Jake) are in College and Jessica is applying for the nursing program.

This fall Connie and I went to Georgia and stayed at the Rawlings Inn. What an enjoyable trip! The first morning there we had visitors, (Dan and Barbara). The Blue Angels were performing in Atlanta that weekend. The show was spectacular as always. Also, Ben and Cinda were able to get one of my quilts quilted (The Yellow Brick Road). Thanks to all.

On Friday after Thanksgiving we had lunch here in Dade City at Beef’s with Dan, Barbara, Monica, Herman, Ralph, Paula, Danny and Evan. It was so good to see everyone.

Love to All

Margie

From Steve and family:

Hello all

We hope this past year has been good for all and hope and pray this upcoming year will be full of happiness, joy and peace. We are doing good.
Steve started his elder duties at church in January-he is a natural at it and does a great job. He serves for a month at a time, he feels very honored and loves it. He also completed 50 hours of training and is now commissioned as a Stephens Minister (good name right?) he can provide one-to-one Christian care to people who are hurting in the congregation--could be from divorce, grief, terminal illness, depression and it's confidential plus he has the resources to refer them for additional care if needed. Steve is still very active with the Boy Scouts--they just finished their major fund raising event which is selling popcorn-as an incentive, the boys get to throw pies at Steve-for every $100 they sell they get 1 pie to throw-this year they get to throw 4 pies!!! It's always a lot of fun!
Mae spends most of her time staying and taking care of her mom. Her mom just got out of the hospital, thought it was a heart attack, but it was a angina attack, first one ever! Pretty scary-her blood pressure went very high then they medicated her and it went way down and they had a hard time stabilizing it- then after being in bed for 6 days and 87 yrs old she's very weak, but she's coming along slowly. She is very thankful and appreciative to have Mae taking such good care of her. Mae also had cataract surgery on both eyes (one at a time) She has a different lens implant in each eye-one for close and one for far-it is taking some time to retrain her eyes and her brain, but they say it could take up to a year to get used to it!! She also has very dry eyes and that doesn't help, but she is doing good.
Chris is doing very well. He still works at Bush Gardens and loves it!! (thank God he wasn't affected by the layoffs!) at 21 he bought his 1st house!! In July of this year he bought a 3 bedroom 2 bath house in Tampa the bank owned it but it wasn't in bad shape just needed a little here and there-but with mom & dad & friends- got it all fixed up and he LOVES it!! It's perfect for him-he has a roommate which helps out with the finances. His house is about 1 mile from Bush Gardens and a few miles from USF where he is a full time junior. "GO BULLS"
Lori still works for Wilton at Michaels teaching classes on cake making & decorating-she is very good at what she does, she had a few executives take her class and was very impressed with her skills. Bush Gardens has asked her to come and teach their bakers about making specialty cakes! (that's in the works now--Chris didn't even know about it!) Lori and Dan recently took a trip to South Carolina and loved it there!
Spencer is doing good. He will be in his last year at PHCC and doing well. He still works part time for the fireworks company and also works with his friend who is the captain on a charter boat and he cooks when there is a special occasion. He has recently been in contact with his biological father after 20 years. He met his grandmother and has many aunts, uncles and cousins--he also found out he has brothers and sisters! He has met his father and all seems to be going good. He is going to spend 3 weeks up in Michigan and will celebrate his 21st birthday and Christmas with them. (I think he is going to get a crash course on snowmobiling and shoveling snow!! ) This is very exciting for him and we are very happy for him to have met this part of his family--we pray it all goes well.
Well that's about it from us.

Lots of love, peace and Gods blessings to all!
Merry Christmas
Steve, Mae & Chris
Lori & Spencer

From Renee and family:

Greetings to all,

This year has been a really good year. I received another promotion at work where I am actually doing the same job I was doing, just with extra money which is great! Clark’s business continues to be successful.

Clark & I get to spend quite a bit of time with Emma on most weekends. She is a real joy and has a wonderful little personality. We look forward to our time with her.

Clark & I made a quick trip to Cape Cod this summer and spent some quality time with his 95 year old Aunt Barbara and his sister, Peggy was also there from California. We had a really good time, enjoyed our visit and the weather was beautiful.

We want to thank God for our family and friends and all the many Blessings we have received and wish all of you happiness, peace, love & good health.

We have been truly Blessed!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Clark & Renee

From Mary Beth

Wishing all of you a blessed Christmas and a beautiful New Year! Love,
Mary Beth

From Lisa and family:

Greetings from the North Country…NH of course! Alan has been based in Boston for about a year now and really is happy that he doesn’t have to commute to St. Louis. It has worked out really well. On the other hand, sadly we received a call two days before Thanksgiving from Alan’s mother that his father (Paul) has cancer. We have been told that his cancer is not an aggressive kind; however it is in his chest, back and brain. The initial prognosis is 1 – 5 years. He has started radiation treatments and will continue to 10 treatments which will be followed with chemo. Alan and I would very much appreciate any and all prayers said for his father and his family. We thank you in advance.

Me, well I just keep getting a little fatter and a little sassier. Other than that I run around a lot, here and there. I never seem to have much to account for at the end of the day except helping the family accomplish their goals and visiting with some wonderful friends. Maybe it’s all those lunches that are causing a problem. Oh by the way, how wonderful it was to meet so many of you for breakfast at the Cracker Barrel this summer! All I can say is that God is very good to me, He shows me His love more and more and I just stand in awe!

Rebecca graduated from UNH last May with her Bachelor of Music in Music Education degree. We knew that landing a teaching job would be difficult in this economy. But, by the Lord’s grace, at the end of the summer she got a call for a long term sub position at an elementary school about 50 minutes from home. She teaches preschool thru 6th grade music as well as beginning and advanced band. She has about 340 students all together and really loves it. The teacher she was filling in for had suffered her 5th concussion last spring which caused some brain injury. I think she slipped in the tub. She (Anne) has since applied for disability benefits and is not planning on returning this year. So it looks like Becca will have the position for the rest of the year. Becca participated in a local community band over the summer and has been participating in another local community band all year. She really enjoys it!

Katie did start cheering this past summer and has found her latest passion. She cheered for the Bedford Jaguars 15U team. They placed 2nd in the state and 2nd at the regional competition which included all the New England states. They were behind the same team both times. They qualified for the National competition in Orlando to be held in Dec. However, they had already decided not to go unless they placed 1st in the regional competition. Katie has also made her school’s basketball cheerleading team and was picked as one of two team captains. Alan has commented that if he couldn’t have boys, he was at least happy that one daughter chose music and the other one chose cheer, that way he could have a good reason to go to some football and basketball games. : )

As always may God bless you all richly, abundantly above all that you can imagine. Much love always,

Lisa, Alan, Becca and Katie

From Teresa and family:

Seasons Greetings,  Hope everyone is happy and well.  We are all doing very well.  Things are pretty much the same as last year when we checked in.  Caleb is still doing the directional boring with the gas company near Atlanta.  He moved into a house back in the summer, and is happy to be out away from the noise and hubbub.  He enjoys the solitude of his new place.  He is still near Dad so they go hunting and do things together now and again.  Jess is still in Tampa.  She keeps very busy with her two jobs.  The one she has working with her friend who retails on Amazon.com and ebay has really picked up, so now that the busy season is here I rarely see her.  I still love my new job.  We just started using a new computer system for our property rental and accounting.  What we had was archaic so it has been quite a challenge getting it up and running, but after only about three weeks of use I can already tell it is going to decrease the work load lots.  I did manage to get a ride in my boss' plane.  It's an open-cockpit biplane, and he took me up and did aerobatics  It was great!  It took me back to when Dad took me up when I was eleven or twelve.  I even got to fly it for a while, and take it through some turns.  I had to wear a parachute, and learn all that comes with that.  I was tempted not to 'rachet down' just to try it out, but decided I'd better learn how to use one on purpose first--not just for an emergency situation.  My boss loves to freak people out when he takes his brother out for a jump.  He points out that two left, but only one came back.  He said I was as game as he's ever seen, and offered to take me up again.  I can't wait.  The ten days of freezing weather we had last winter killed the fish in my pond.  We had so much fun pulling those 24 inch bass out of there.  Now it is so sad.  We had to spray for the mosquito fern a few years back, and that killed them off.  I was just beginning to see some good activity coming back last year, but the weather cleaned it out completely.  If anyone has any good ideas for bringing it back on a very low budget, please chime in.  I enjoyed our get together with the gang at the Cracker Barrel and then going to the Keel & Curly winery this summer.  You guys won't believe this, but I haven't been back there one time.  I was a little scared when I found out it took me only seven minutes to get home from the winery that I might frequent the place too frequently.  So far my money is safe.  That Key West Key Lime frozen daiquiri was  soooo gooood, though, after working out in the yard on a hot day.  Well, I guess that's all from us.  We love and miss you all.

Merry Christmas from,

Teresa, Jessica and Caleb

From Melinda and family:

Last June Melinda’s friend begged her to come to Atlanta to join her for her class reunion.  They went to the new Coca Cola museum and it was OK but she liked the old Coca Cola museum better.  She stayed with her best friend there for five days.  They had a cook out and farewell party for us.  We enjoyed the party and being with them.

Lisa and her family came down to FL last July.  We played volleyball in mom’s backyard all day.  We were worn out and had a good time. Somehow Lisa and Becca left the house for a short time and we quickly decorated for Lisa’s 50th birthday before she came back.  We made it. WHEW!!!  She was surprised and didn’t suspect a thing.  Good JOB!

On Jimmy’s family side – we went to Orlando to visit his niece and her first baby boy.  They had come to visit her mom for a week.  They are from Concord, NC.  We came to visit for a half a day and joined them to eat dinner and chat.  We have missed them and were glad to see them again.

Last August Melinda called Warren’s Pediatrician to request a check up with Dr. Front. The office said they were sorry but the Dr. had passed away.  We were shocked that she passed away. She was only 51 years old.  They don’t know the cause of death, probably natural cause.  Dr. Front has known Warren since birth.  She was a wonderful doctor and patience with us in communication.  We will miss her!

Last October we went to the Florida School for the Deaf & Blind for the 125th anniversary of their founding. Jimmy really enjoyed meeting many alumni and some of his classmates from 1968. He also decided to end his service as an officer. He had served for 25 years as an officer or a volunteer for the Florida School for the Deaf Alumni Association. He was their first Secretary in 1985. He will continue to attend and help them when he can. We met old friends and saw big differences in several buildings that had been remodeled on the FSDB campus. There were more than 800 people who were there.  We both were volunteers to help the officers of the Alumni Association.  We were very busy all day but we enjoyed meeting different people and meeting our former teachers.

We are looking forward to watching Warren’s High School baseball games. He is a senior now and this is his last baseball season. He will be a full time infielder. He is looking into colleges and may try to apply at Jimmy’s alma mater, Gallaudet University in Washington, DC.

May you and yours have a safe and happy season and a healthy prosperous new year!!!

Love, Melinda, Jimmy & Warren

From Bonnie and family:

2010 - Hello to all. We’ve had our usual busy year, starting the year off with sugar cane. Went to Rendezvous and sold the majority of the cane syrup. We also went to Reneger’s flea market in Mount Dora. We processed approximately 50 gallons of honey including three different kinds of blossoms. We bottled golden rod, orange blossom, and palmetto and have been selling it off the farm. In April puppies were born on the farm. We kept three, so now we have a total of 5 dogs. The kids finished their junior and freshman years and then enrolled in a two week drivers ed class over the summer.  During the summer we went tubing down the Itchetucknee river. We also did some skiing, tubing, and wake boarding at the lake. Before school started the kids started the swim team practices and by the end of swim season Samson went to regionals swimming the butterfly stroke. Rachael joined the High School dance team, and we recently had her 18th birthday party. We found a truck for the kids and Rachael claimed it. Samson was glad because he wanted the Firebird, so now they each have their own car. Rachael got her driver’s license and is driving on her own now. Bonnie is happy that she now has a gopher to run to the store for her. And Rachael is now driving them to school. Samson wants to get a job. We spent Thanksgiving in Jacksonville with Mike’s family. At the end of November we are finally butchering our own cow for the freezer; approximately 700 lbs of meat. No more high priced meat markets for us. Hope you all have a great and wonderful Christmas. God bless you All-ways. Proverbs 1:7 - The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom, and instruction.

The Webbs…Mike, Bonnie, Rachael & Samson

From Sam:

Hello all

I am thankful to be with Publix for nearly 17 years. Good company especially in these tough times. I am doing well. When I was a kid I had to be dragged to church. I did not really like going. As I get older I appreciate the fact that I was taught about God before I can remember. Now I see the importance of being with God's people. We need each other.

Kyle is a freshman at Tuskegee University. His major is chemical engineering. Small school, smaller town. He was not looking forward to more school, but he says it is not as bad as he thought it would be. He makes good grades. Boredom is his biggest complaint.

Andy now lives in Sunrise, Florida. Carlene is in the process of moving to Florida. Andy is currently staying with Carlene's brother Vaughn. I am very happy to have him so close. He will be coming here for Christmas.

May the Lord bless all of you. And may all of you be a blessing.

Love Andy, Kyle and Sam.

From Fred:

Freddie Claus.

From Mike and family:

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!

It's hard to believe that another year has gone by already. And each one seems to be busier than the last.

Since last year Sarah has changed jobs and is now teaching science to seventh grade girls in a charter school in Atlanta. She's a natural (just like her Mom) and really enjoys being with her classes. We've been able to visit her a couple of times this fall, but her days are full and the weekends are short.

It's hard to believe, but Caroline is already in her fourth year at the University of Virginia, completing her studies in both History and Spanish. Not sure where she will head next - maybe grad school, maybe teaching. We've been able to visit her a couple of times this fall as well. Graduation in May doesn't feel that far off anymore.

Nancy continues to teach her class of three-year-olds. She says that every class has its own personality, and this one is no different. This year she's also leading a Spanish program for all of the pre-schoolers in the program.

As for me, I'm still a shipbuilder. This past summer, Northrop Grumman announced that it would consider strategic alternatives for our business to include either a sale or a spin-off of the business. I've had to dust off the MBA and have spent a lot more time in New York than I had before. The "preferred path" is for the business to spin-off. If that happens, I would be the CEO, the company name would be Huntington Ingalls Industries, and would trade on the NYSE under the symbol HII. We're a long ways from that, but the next few months will be even busier.

We hope that the Peace of the Season lasts the entire year for each and every one of you.

Love from us all,
Caroline and Sarah,
Nancy and Mike

From Bernie and family:

In many ways, 2010 has been a year of perseverance and preparation.

Bernie continued to fly for Alabama Lifesaver in Birmingham, commuting from Atlanta every other week. He and Jennifer again ran the ING Georgia Half-Marathon in March, as well as the Peachtree Road Race on July 4th.

Matthew began his senior year at Collins Hill High School. In November, he was accepted to Valdosta State University, followed in December by Auburn University. He worked as a lifeguard for Gwinnett County throughout the year.

As Matthew prepared to finish high school, Nathaniel was just getting started. He transitioned to Collins Hill in the fall, where he joined the orchestra. He chose baseball as his sport this fall.

Jennifer’s career took another turn as she left the housing market. She now works in marketing for Certified Fire Protection which provides fire suppression and protective service for commercial applications.

As a family we look forward to all that 2011 will bring. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2011! Bernie, Jennifer, Matthew and Nathaniel

From Susie and family:

From Susie, Redding, Jen and Mikie:
Thankfully 2010 did not include a full household move, but it did involve a number of fabulous adventures! Our blessings started over Christmas last year as we traveled to Naples to spend Christmas with Grandpa Clyde. It was great to take a break from the cold and we really enjoyed our time with him. In January, the snow fall in our area was unbelievable, I mean, REALLY unbelievable. The Federal Government closed for about a week and then only essential folks were allowed at work because the parking lots couldn’t be cleared. Here’s hoping we don’t get a repeat this year… In February Grandpa Clyde made his final PCS to Heaven to join Grandma Myrtis and all the Angels and Saints. Redding and I made the trip down to Naples to host a small memorial service where friends and family gathered with wonderful memories. We were able to find a tape recording of Grandpa Clyde singing Amazing Grace (1986 timeframe) and Jen was able to clean up the noise and put it on a CD to play at the service, it was a big hit. Clyde served in WWII in Okinawa, had some great stories to share and it was an honor to share some of them. Then on to Spring musical and a myriad of school activities. Jen demonstrated her talent with a lead role in the musical “Into The Woods”, and even though we hear the kids fooling around with their lines for about 2 months before the show, it is AMAZING to watch these teenage kids perform at the level they do. Mikie was awarded “Best Tech” award for the behind the scene work he did for this show as well. In April, Redding and I went to Montgomery for Brian’s Retirement ceremony, and can I say I’ve have very few moments of greater pride. Thanks, Brian, Vicki and the Boys for your 20 years of dedicated service to our great country! It was great seeing all of Brian’s family and an extra treat to see Aunt Cinda as well!! Of course the spring also was a time of big decisions for Jennifer and college… she had several choices, but her heart wanted Ave Maria University in Naples… it wasn’t until early June that she finally received her acceptance letter. Not sure if it was just the way the school works, or her twice a day calls that made the letter appear, but we are thrilled it all worked out. Her High School graduation ceremony was great, although it created a ‘heart smile’, the lump in my throat was certainly evident as well. My baby girl is all grown up! She spent the first month of the summer in Canada with friends while the rest of us enjoyed our Nation’s capital and even took in a Braves game up here. In August, I changed jobs and now work in the Pentagon, another national treasure. The drive is a bit longer, but it is always beautiful driving along the river and up through Old Town. At the end of August we took Jen to Ave. What a beautiful campus, even if Latin is a required course. September brought a new adult into the family, as Jen turned 18 and a new school year for Mikie. Between drama, photography and other activities, we are certainly glad he is driving himself around. The fall has been quite busy, but nothing extraordinary. We just returned from Florida where we spent Thanksgiving with Jen at the house in Naples and had a great time. Again, as this year closes, and we acknowledge how truly blessed we are, we remember all our Service members serving in harm’s way and ask a special blessing upon them! We wish each and every one of you a very Joyous and Blessed Holiday season!! Our thoughts and prayers will include you all, May 2011 be overflowing and pushed down with blessings!

LOVE YOU!
Redding, Susie, Jen and Mikie

From Dean and family:

As the sun sets earlier and snow starts to blanket the ground, it’s time to once again bring everyone up to date on the year our family has had.

We only had one vacation of note this year: Hershey, PA. We spent two days at Hershey Park and one day at Gettysburg National Battlefield. Tony has fallen in love with big, steel roller coasters and his head turned every time the Great Bear roared by. But then, no one should be surprised as that is his parents’ favorite ride also.

Before we went to Gettysburg, Tony read the book “The Killer Angels”, a historical novel of the battle. Being able to see where Buford held off the Confederate army on the morning of the first day, climb over the boulders that were strewn over the Devil’s Den, walk along the line where Chamberlain’s 20th Maine anchored the Union’s far left on Little Round Top and stand at the wall where Pickett’s charge culminated made the actions go from words on a page into reality.

Tony and Carrie are doing very well in school. Tony completed the 6th grade and Carrie her 2nd back in the late spring. Tony had his best year yet in basketball. Their team won the St. Francis Christmas Tournament and made it into the semi-finals of the end-of-year tournament. Carrie made her first communion and confirmation in April. It seems like only yesterday that we were baptizing her… She’s growing so fast.

In August, Anne volunteered to run the “Life on the Lake” fundraiser for Our Lady of the Lake school. This event is the primary fundraiser for the school and typically raises over $50,000 in just one evening. It consists of games of chance, raffles, silent and live auctions. That alone would be daunting enough, but add onto it dinner and dancing/entertainment and you can imagine just how busy Anne will be in the next few months. This coming year’s “Life on the Lake” is February 5th, so keep her in your prayers!

In February, NASA announced a change in plans and with it came the cancellation of the Orion project. Having spent the last 5 years working it, this was a major blow. As it turns out, however, the government has a real problem cancelling anything and we have been given a reprieve. At this time we don’t know what our future budget will be, nor do we know what mission Orion will end up performing, but we are still working on it and look to be doing so for the foreseeable future.

As always, we hope that everyone had a wonderful year and if you’re ever near the north shore of Ohio, please look us up!

Dean, Anne, Tony & Carrie Petters

From Brian and family:

2010 brought an avalanche of change to our home.

Brian finished his twenty years of service to the Air Force and retired in April. His retirement ceremony was a true celebration of a wonderful career, and was enjoyed by all. We especially want to thank Aunt Cinda for coming! And to have Susie and Redding here was very special (She even filled Dad’s old role of stealing the show! Love ya, Sis!) Of course, things have calmed down after that. Brian went through a two month job search, leading to his acceptance of a position selling insurance with Colonial Life and Casualty. Unfortunately, Brian isn’t cut out to sell insurance, so he is looking for work again. With God’s help, he will find something that he enjoys. He is enjoying his new role as Scoutmaster for Ben and Leo’s Boy Scout Troop.

Vicki decided to expand her teaching experience and started teaching middle school science and math at Montgomery Catholic. She has found it to be quite a challenge, as “not all of the kids are John and Ben”, as put by the school president. Still, she has embraced the challenge and enjoys the interaction.

John entered his freshman year at the University of Montevallo, near Birmingham. He is majoring in Math, which he has a keen talent for. He is adjusting to the college life well and enjoys it. (He’s also enjoying the privilege of having a beard, which he wasn’t allowed to have in high school!) In his spare time, he is working as an intermural scorekeeper. He earned the Presidential Scholarship at Montevallo, based on his graduating third in his class. As he finished out his senior year, he was named both the top math student and the top English student in the school.

Ben continues to excel as well. He has been named a National Merit Semi-finalist (Finalists have not been named yet) and has to sort through a lot of college recruitment letters. He also spent the fall finishing his Eagle Scout project, and only needs to meet the final board of review to garner this high honor. As of now, he is the top student in his class.

Because of Vicki taking the teaching job, Leo and Henry have stopped homeschooling and have begun attending school. Leo is in eighth grade and Vicki is one of his teachers. He is a Life Scout, and was elected into the Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s camping honor society, on the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States. In the fall, he played football, mostly offensive line, but unfortunately the team wasn’t very successful. Henry took to school as a natural. His teachers love his enthusiasm and intelligence. He is a Webelos Scout, and will transition into the Boy Scouts in February. Both he and Leo are progressing well on piano.

We enjoyed our visit to Melda and Jack’s in July, and the chance to see many of you at DeSoto State Park. As always, we hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year, and look for the chance to see you in 2011.

From Connie and Thom:

It is that time of the year again. “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” to each and every one of you. I have the most wonderful family anyone could ever want. I am proud to be a part of this family.
I’m doing better medically this year. After the stay in the Hospital in October of 2009, I noticed I was losing hair by the handful daily, in late January. So I went to the Doctor to question the delay of 4 months before the loss occurred. He told me after the body goes through a shock like mine did it could take up to a year to start losing hair. So I had my hair cut short in May. It is getting long again.
I did change doctors in January, then in March, I got a call that the Doctor I’d changed to was no longer with the Florida Medical Clinic, so they assigned me to another doctor. So far I have been happy with him.
Joe & Amy, Jerry & Kelly, Kathy & Kelly, Mary and Joe, and Thom all went together and got me a Kindle DX for Christmas last year. I have done a lot of reading throughout the year. (I like it as it doesn’t take up as much shelf space as paperbacks).
Am still going to Bible Study, on Thursdays, this year we studied Mark’s Gospel, then we studied Isaiah, now we are studying Luke’s Gospel. I think we will study the Acts of the Apostle’s next followed by John’s Gospels. Then who knows, we have studied some of these more than once, and learn something new each time.
Thom is still working at Busch Gardens in the Rhino Rally section. He’s a driver, doing the spiel for the customers, about the different animals. He seems to like the job. They made some cuts in employees recently and his section was not affected. (Whew, he made it through again.) He still has a JOB.
On October 15th, Margie and I left to see Cinda and Ben for a weekend. Margie had a Quilt she wanted Cinda to quilt on her machine. We had a Great trip up and back, traffic was not bad either way. We had a nice visit, while we were there Dan and Barb happened to show up. It just so happened, the Navy Blue Angels were having an air show that weekend. So we found a good point in the area to watch the show. We had a nice Family weekend. We were prepared to leave the quilt top, for them to finish after we headed home. They were able to finish the quilting on Saturday night. And we headed back to Florida and home about 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, Margie was home by about 6:00 p.m. I was home by 7:15 p.m. We were home safe and sound that Sunday evening. Thanks Margie for going with me. Thanks Cinda and Ben for the wonderful hospitality, and Dan and Barb for being able to join us for the weekend.
Then a couple weeks ago, Dan & Barb were in the area, when Evan came to Florida to visit them, they had a chance to have Lunch at Cracker Barrel, with Nichole, Evan, Danny and myself. Thanks Dan & Barb for the nice visit. It is always great to get together with family.
The rest of the year was the same old stuff, work, work, work, I’m still working with Lanny, His health is much better this year, he still has to go for regular checkups at Moffitt Cancer Center. His wife’s health is about the same, she’s had a couple bouts of breast cancer herself and has to have treatments about every 3 to 4 months, as a preventative measure. They are not getting any worse, they are holding their own. As long as they keep up their follow up checkups.
I’m going to have to save some room for somebody else in this newsletter.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year.

From Mary and family:

Well here we go another year and hope everyone is doing great. Happy Holidays to all.

Looks like we have made it another year how they seem to pass so fast.

Let me see Joe’s still at Publix he made Liquor Specialist at the store he works at they put a Liquor store in there and they seem to be doing good.

I am still with Publix 10 yrs now (too long ) still work in the Deli.

Chris is working at Lowe’s and still looking all the time for a way to put accounting degree to use. But we all know how the Job market is out there we are just lucky to have one..

This is Tiffany’s Last year in High School and she is still doing a great job of making the Honor Roll all A’s. So hope she does it all year like last year. We will see. She keeps putting in applications for jobs but no one is calling back.

She is in a program at school where she and others come to Publix to work from 8 am to 10 am which is nice to get them some experience of working, and dealing with customers.

Other then that not much else has happens to us around here.

Hope everyone is doing great and have a great New Year.

Love all of you

Mary, Joe, Chris, Tiffany

From Joe and Family:

Happy Holidays to all

This year started out with a bang! I ended up having to take Joe to the ER in the middle of the night for what turned out to be a couple of Kidney stones. Then upon reviewing his x-rays they found a small spot on his left lung. So over the course of the year they have been monitoring it. So far so good it has not grown! Then I had to take him to the ER in March he tore his bicep muscle from his shoulder while at work. So he kept us hopping for the first part of the year. Oh, and the most important part…. He has been dieting since July and has lost about 80 lbs to date. Those who haven’t seen him recently will not recognize him. As for myself things are still the same.

The girls are doing quite well. Nichole is a senior at Wesley Chapel High School she will graduate in May 2011 at the Tampa Convention Center. She is working at McDonald’s and Publix. She is set to go on her first cruise with her mom after Christmas. Amy is still working at Publix and McDonald’s. She is still attending PHCC. She is due to have some minor surgery to remove a non-working gland in her neck first part of the New Year. Baylee well it has been an exciting year for her… She participates in her schools Odyssey of the Mind Program they had their State tournament in April for which her team took first place in their division. Then we went to the State tournament for which her team took second place for their division. So that sent them to World’s (in the OM world this is huge) which was held at Michigan State University in May. Her team came in 9th place out of 72 teams from across the world. Then we found out she had been selected to be a part of the National Junior Honor Society for TEWMS. So she has had quite an exciting year.

Well, that is pretty much it from the Joe Carr Family! We hope that everyone has a Safe and Prosperous 2011. We send out our love and gratitude to this great family of ours

Joe, Amy, Amy, Nichole and Baylee (of course all of our puppies say Hi)

From Kathy and family:

Hello, I am hoping this finds everyone happy and healthy. This year has been so busy. I started nursing school in January. And I am still trying to work 30 hours a week. Hunter is in the 10th grade and doing very well. He got his learners permit over the summer and can't wait to get a vehicle to drive. Maybe next summer. Sierra is still dancing. She is on the tap team again. She also takes ballet and Lyrical. She really loves to dance. She started middle school this year and loves it! She said she likes changing classes and not being stuck with the same people all day. We are wishing you all a happy holiday and an even better 2011. Love Kathy

From Dan and Barbara:

We’re still Living the Dream and enjoying it more and more so here goes. I’m trying to keep this short so you don’t get too bored but it’s so hard to do.
Dan and I had a pretty active 2010 starting with a trip to Georgia to spend time with our Grandson Nick who was close to finishing up his AIT in Augusta Georgia studying satellite communications. As soon as Nick had some free time We picked him up and were able to spend time with Cinda and Ben visiting and eating some of Cinda’s wonderful home cooking. Nick wanted to go to the Aquarium in Atlanta so Dan and I granted his wish for an enjoyable trip there. While visiting the Rawlings family, Cinda, Dan and I went to a Tea Party Rally held at the Atlanta Courthouse where Neil Cavuto from Fox News was also airing his show. What an event this was! Dan was interviewed by both NBC and CBS and ended up on both networks news shows in Atlanta. Ben was at home and was able to tape the shows so we could watch it that evening. Of course they cut a lot of what Dan had to say out but it was still pretty exciting to see him on TV. During Neil Cavuto’s recap of his show, Cinda and I could be seen in the background standing on a rock wall to get a view of everything going on. The entire get together was pretty interesting and all of the people we met were very friendly. There was a huge crowd there even though the news media stated otherwise. The entire event was well organized and we were happy we were able to attend.
We left for California the last part of April to check on our house and we were happy to find our house still standing, and the grass still green. While in California we visited with several friends before heading for Idaho/Washington State to visit our Granddaughter Briana and Great Granddaughter Halli. We Enjoyed spending time with Briana and Halli and were due to leave when Halli was thrown off of a horse and was hospitalized with a concussion and blood was shown on her brain. Needless to say the next few days were scary but prayers from all of our family brought her through it and she was back to normal after a couple of weeks. Thank you again for all your prayers.
Colorado was our next stop to see Grandson Evan and his wonderful family. We sure do miss being around Evan, he has grown into a handsome young man of 16 yrs.
Our trip across the US wouldn’t be complete without visiting with Aunt Hilda in Yankton, South Dakota. Deletta and Don were also there to greet us for a short but enjoyable visit. Aunt Hilda looked wonderful and is a very young 97 yrs old. We cherish our visits with her, she is so full of life and love talking with her.
After crossing many states and staying at various campgrounds we arrived in Hershey, Pennsylvania. We met Laurie and JR near the Poconos, picked up the Grand little munchkins Rhapsody and Samantha and brought them with us for 5 days of fun in the Hershey, PA area. They had a ball, fishing, canoeing, visiting Hershey theme park, the Indian Echo Caves and of course Chocolate World. They thought they were pretty special taking turns in the passenger seat of the motor-home on the way back to NY. Dan and I had so much fun having the girls with us. It brought back many wonderful memories of traveling with Briana, Evan and Nick when they were younger. We stayed and visited with Laurie and family for another week and took our time stopping here and there before going to Washington, DC to attend Glen Beck’s “Restoring Honor Rally”! There must have been well over 600,000 people there! What an event this was and we were thrilled to be there. It was fantastic to say the least.
After DC the motor-home headed north once more with the planned stop NY to visit with Laurie and family again. We stayed in the NY area for several weeks and enjoyed all the fall colors starting to change in the Catskill Mountains. It started getting colder and colder so in early October we headed south once more.
We stopped at Cinda and Ben’s in Smryna, GA and surprised Margie and Connie while they were visiting Cinda. I wish you could have seen Margie’s face as she answered the door and saw us! Priceless! Connie was surprised too and couldn’t figure out who Margie knew knocking on cinda’s door! We enjoyed spending time with everyone sharing some quilting time and even got to see the “Blue Angels” who were having an air-show at Dobbins AFB. We didn’t have to go to the Base as we found great seats in the parking lot of an auto dealership. They are still fantastic and brought Dan and I back to our days in the Navy while he was touring with this elite team. What a tough tour of duty he had traveling all over the U.S. with the “Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Team” so many years ago!
We are back in Florida and enjoying visiting enjoyed visiting with family and old friends.
This year we had a lot to be thankful for at Thanksgiving with our son Danny and Grandson Evan being here with us. It was wonderful having them here and we will cherish the memories. We spent a lot of the time on the road trying to visit with as much family as we could. They had a great time even being cramped in our motor-home. We miss them very much but Danny had to get back to San Diego, board his ship to head back to his Island and Evan had to go back to school in Colorado. Thank you everyone in sharing your time with Danny and Evan, some of which was on such short notice.
Dan and I are heading for NY to spend Christmas with laurie and family in their beautiful new home which they just moved into. Hope our room is ready! Laurie will have plenty of work for us to do while there. Gee, I wonder if Dan will help J.R. hang the Christmas lights!!!!
After the Holidays we hope to get together with more family and friends as often as possible.
With Love from our little RV haven we want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New year!

From Nick:

So last year I joined the army, I’m pretty sure you all knew that but this year I finally finished with my training. I was in training for a year pretty much to include basic and my tech school. I was trained to be in the signal corps and work with satellite communications. I basically hook up to satellites and request usage from the distance end, supply network access and internet to everyone out in the field. All my training took place in Georgia. I was at FT Benning for basic and then moved over to FTGordon for my tech school to be trained as a 25S. While I was in school I got to see Aunt Cinda a few times and stayed with her in Smyrna a couple times to just get away from all the army guys and have some freedom for a little while, it was nice. I also went to the aquarium in Atlanta with Grandma and Grandpa, that was really cool. Oma, Tanta Anelia and Uncle Lloyde also headed up my way and I got to see them. Some of this stuff happened last year but it’s all gone by so quick it flows together and I didn’t write one of these last year so I have some catching up to do. I got to go home after I was done with training for a couple weeks. My parents are moving into a new house now. It was being built while I was up there. It’s really big. I got a car, JR gave me his old car, signed it over to my name so I have a car fully paid for. It’s 10 years old but it works and I like it. I had to spend $1000 on repairs and stuff for it before it was good to go but now it’s working really well except for the AC but I mean who needs AC down in Texas. I am now stationed at Ft. Hood, TX the biggest military instillation in the world and yeah it’s pretty big I’d have to say. I’m with 57th ESB, Expeditionary Signal Battalion. I’m in 1st platoon C. Co. in the TacSat team. There is just 3 of us in the team so it’s pretty cool.

I went down to FL for Thanksgiving this year. That was a blast, got to see everyone on my Dads side of the family, plus some. Grandma and Grandpa came over for a day and Evan and Uncle Danny were with them. It’s been a while since I’ve seen them, I enjoyed seeing them again. While I was down there I was in a little fishing competition between some of Uncle Lloyde's friends. It’s like a family fishing tournament for after thanksgiving to have everyone go out with the kids and fish and see who catches more. We came in third place which is cool, but the best part of that is we caught a pelican, and it was a decent size one too. We were trailing bait behind the boat and the pelican decided to try to eat one, got a hook stuck in its beak. We had to reel it in and had it in the back of the boat and had to unhook him by hand. Interesting moment, made for a more interesting story to be told at a later date. Also went golfing and to the beach while in FL, now I’m thinking of picking up golfing again. When Ii got back to TX the very next day I had eye surgery to correct my vision. The exact surgery I had was PRK which is sort of like Lasik but instead of cutting a flap into your eye and then shooting a laser into it they grind down the cornea of the eye and then shoot a laser into it, it’s supposed to be safer and have less to no long term effects, like with the flap you always have that flap on your eye it never completely heals where this heals over. The only down fall to this method is it hurts a lot more and the recovery time is a bit longer. I’m doing okay now not needing glasses and can see pretty well. I’m still in the vision fluctuating phase but it will get better with time.

Okay so that’s pretty much everything I can think of. I probably have a lot of grammar/spelling errors I haven’t typed up or written anything other than short texts and messages in a long time.

From Cinda and Ben:

Merry Christmas, everyone!

How interesting that they said we would have a warmer, drier winter, and we’ve been much colder (and perhaps wetter) than usual, thus far! We’re going to 14 degrees tonight with a high of 30 tomorrow. I do pray for the citrus growers in Florida. Brrrrr.

Speaking of weather, in January of this year, I traveled to Santa Cruz, California with my friend, Dottie. She and I attended the wedding there of the son of our friend, Dianne. This was all thanks to Ben who safely navigated us through last winter’s most treacherous road conditions to get us safely to the airport. Of course, California was warm and beautiful.

In April, it was quite an honor to attend Brian Petters’ Air Force retirement ceremony at Maxwell AFB. It was doubly-highlighted by the surprise (for me) visit from Susie and Redding! What an inspiring event! I also did a few days of vacation-relief for the True’s nanny in April. It is always so special to spend time in Orlando with Rebecca, Travis, Leah and Lauren. So hard to believe how much children grow in such a short time.

One of the highlights of our year was the week that Ryan came to visit and Millie was able to join us part of that time. It was so much fun to see the cousins having such a great time together. July was our saddest month, as dear little Cleo, our Boston Terrier granddog, went to her reward. She is greatly missed.

We enjoyed having Nick Barthle spend a few of his weekends with us while he was stationed at Fort Gordon, near Augusta, before being transferred to Ft Hood. Thanks, Nick, for sharing your time with us.

August was quite an eventful month at the Rawlings. Ben had been put on a 30-day heart monitor due to an ever-slowing heart rate. By the fourth day, the doctor’s office called with instructions to go immediately to the emergency room, as the monitor had picked up a 4 second “AV Block” (i.e. his heart stopped during that interval) while he was sitting at his computer. The next day he received his new pacemaker. It took a couple of months to get his arrhythmia meds tweaked properly, but everything healed well, and he is doing great now.

In October, Connie and Margie drove to Atlanta for a weekend. Dan and Barbara surprised them, popping in for breakfast on Saturday morning, while on their return trip from New York. There was an added bonus to the weekend, as it happened that the Blue Angels were doing an airshow at Dobbins ARB (about 5 miles away), so we were all able to watch them perform their heart-stopping routines.

Ben’s brother and his wife (Tommy and Mary) led a tour group from Florida through Atlanta on their way to the Biltmore Estate earlier this month. They invited us, along with Ben’s sister and her husband (Betsy and Bob) from Chattanooga to join them for a group dinner one evening….so we had a nice impromptu Rawlings Family Reunion.

We send our love and blessings for a very Merry Christmas and a very safe and happy 2011!

Cinda and Ben

From Alexa and family:

Happy Holiday Greetings to everyone! 2010 was a busy year for us. We sold our house in June, bought another one in August, and just finished renovations and moved into the new house a few weeks ago! Right now, we are just so thankful to be out of boxes (mostly) and settling in. We love the new house & Ryan was thrilled to find out that two little boys just his age live right next door!

Ryan has discovered a love of all things Harry Potter this year. He has read the first four books and loves them! We went to Universal Studios this summer to visit the Harry Potter park there and had a great time! We ate cauldron cakes and Bertie Bott's every flavor jellybeans - and when they say "every flavor" they mean it - the first one Ryan had tasted like grass! Ryan has continued to play soccer and moved up to the pre-challenge level this year. He also started lacrosse this fall and loves it!

On a sad note, we lost our dear sweet puppy dog Cleo this year to heart problems. Thankfully, she was with Nana & Papa (Cinda & Ben) when it happened, so we know that even though we couldn't be there with her, she was surrounded by love when it happened. She was a wonderful member of the family and will be dearly missed.

We are looking forward to spending Christmas with Nana & Papa! We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and a Merry Christmas!
Love,
Chris, Alexa & Ryan

From Rebecca and family:

Greetings from Griffin! We have had an eventful year (as I know everyone else has too). I (Rebecca) started back to school at Central GA Technical College in Macon. I have all of my core courses complete but I am still trying to decide what my major will be.

Millie is 3 years old and is in 3K at Rock Springs Christian Academy. She really enjoys it. She is learning so much and is just so smart. She has spent a lot of time with her Nana and Papa in Smyrna and they have really been teaching her a lot too. She now knows how to spell her name.

Jacade got a new job at ABRA Auto Body & Glass. The body shop is located in Griffin, which is a plus that he doesn't have to commute anywhere and can be home to eat dinner with us every night. A couple of weeks ago, he even got promoted to General Manager!

As of December 16, I am quitting my job. I will be staying home with Millie (well, picking her up after school) and just trying to figure out the direction for my life, as far as a degree goes and a job.

We want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Keep us in your prayers and we will do the same.

Jacade, Rebecca and Millie Long

From Melda and Jack:

Hi folks . . . another year has nearly passed. I just looked at the quilt flip calendar in our office and realize it hasn’t been “flipped” since April 19th – guess I’m a little behind the times!!

We have had a great year with some challenges, but lots of rewards. Some of the challenges – very COLD weather last January. It took its toll on our yard and plants. We had eleven days in a row below freezing—that is just not right in Florida. In fact it was in the high teens and low 20s most of the time. I have no recollection of it ever being so cold for so long—just glad we are not still milking cows! We had nice rains all summer without any hurricanes which allowed the water use restrictions to be eased—of course, the water commission couldn’t totally give up all their power over us.

Shortly after the BP oil spill in April, I had the thought with the uncertainty of our west coast Florida beaches being contaminated with oil, that we should at least go to the beach since it had been years before it was too late. Jack and I visited Ft. DeSoto Park in St. Pete which was named the most beautiful beach in 2005 and were amazed at just how beautiful the beach and water was. I never remember the water being so clear and so blue. So, over the summer, mostly early Saturday mornings, we made the hour trip to enjoy the shore. We saw so many things—besides the beautiful shells, we found sand dollars, crabs, star fish and saw sting rays, dolphins, sharks, manatees, lots of bait fish and birds. The sea turtles nest along the beach in that area and we even were lucky enough to see some sea turtle hatchlings. We really enjoyed these outings and are so thankful that our beaches were not affected by the oil spill.

We had lots of fantastic family time this year—including a get-away Memorial Day weekend with Rebecca and Rob and their families. Jack and I hosted a few slumber parties for the grands who are close enough in age that they all play well together. We are lucky that we are able to see them so often and be a part of their lives.

Jack’s mother, Katherine, has been in declining health for several years due to dementia. In addition, she suffered a stroke in mid-August and had abdominal surgery in October of this year. She has recovered from the surgery, but the stroke has left her bed-ridden and completely dependent. Please keep her in your prayers.

We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and may God bless each of you in the New Year.

Lots of love,

Melda and Jack

From Rebecca and Family:

Hello to all! Hope this year has been a good one for everyone. For our family, this year has meant a lot of growing up for our little ones, a lot of hard work on the part of their parents, and a lot of family fun along the way.

It's been amazing to watch the transformation of our girls throughout the year. Leah is now almost 3 1/2 and we're so proud she's taking after her mother and is so bright. Ha ha! Travis thinks she is taking after him. A debate neither of us will win... In January, she started 1/2 day pre-school which she has continued throughout the year. She's adjusted very well to the daily routine, made some terrific friends, and is learning all kinds of impressive new things including some Spanish, Chinese and Sign Language. She continued her swimming lessons but still hates to get her hair wet. She definitely has a mind of her own. Lauren is 13 months old and she is really starting to make her way in the world. Her personality is tremendous already and she always has a smile on her face for everyone she meets. She's walking-- no make that running, to keep up with Leah and tries to mimic everything her big sister does. She's started talking and her 1st word was "uh oh". Her vocabulary is expanding at an exponential rate. Every day there's a new word. It's very cute and incredibly fun to watch. Lauren began survival swimming lessons a few months ago and since she's such a little fish, graduated from the program 2 weeks early. And, in case you are wondering, she has no problem getting her hair wet. Imagine that! 2 sisters as different as can be.

Travis has continued working for Citigroup in their technology department and I've continued to grow my financial services practice. We've worked very hard this year to get everything done, though we did manage to get away a few times for some fun. And, we each made several other business trips to New York and Travis several times to Dallas throughout the year. It looks like Travis will have a fair amount of international travel back on the agenda for next year. I'm lobbying to wipe the dust off my passport. Wishful thinking on my part with our girls still so little.

We traveled to Deer Valley, Utah in February for a long weekend ski trip. We had such a nice time that we're heading back with Leah tomorrow for a few days to show her the snow and see if she'll try some skiing. For Memorial Day weekend, we traveled to North Captiva Island with my parents and Rob, Casey, Laney and Landon. We had a great time with them hanging out at the beach and pool and the cousins all made some nice memories of being together. For the 4th of July we spent time with Travis' parents at their farm in Virginia. The girls had a ball seeing the animals and Leah enjoyed her 1st horse rides. Enjoyed seeing those of you that made it to the July reunion picnic at the beach. Loved seeing Cinda and spending time with her earlier in the year. Always enjoy our visits so much!

We had an especially memorable Thanksgiving holiday this year with a surprise visit from Dan, Barbara, Danny and Evan. Such a treat to see Danny after so many years and for Travis to finally meet him. Too bad we didn't have time to play Rock Band! Danny, next time you are in from Kwajalein, let's make that happen! And it's hard to believe that 8 year old Evan, the one that we have such fond memories of playing New York City tourist with 10 years ago, is now all grown up and 17. Where does the time go?!! We had a great time catching up with everyone. Thanks for visiting. We enjoyed every minute.

Have a Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year! Love, Rebecca, Travis, Leah and Lauren

From Rob and Family:

Hi all! 2010 has been another great year for our family. Landon turned four in January while Laney turned six in May. Casey started teaching at a new school (Corpus Christi) in August and the kids (Pre-K and 1st Grade) are now attending there as well. I'm enjoying my work at the Tampa Bay Sports Commission. It's hard to believe that I have been there for over six years now. We recently added a Havanese puppy named Brady to our family as well. We wish everyone a great holiday season and the happiest of New Years!

Sincerely,
Rob, Casey, Laney, and Landon

From Monica and Herman:

Merry Christmas to all!! Hope each of you is full of the love, joy and peace of this season!

This year started out with the coldest winter either Herman or I can ever remember. Until 2009, Herman had never worked three nights straight watching and caring for the groves due to freezing temperatures. This year I believe it was nine or ten days straight, one day off, then another night or two of freezing temperatures. For a while Herman had a hard time warming up! For all the cold weather, the groves came through in good shape. Oh! There were some very young trees that had been watered (for cold protection) long enough that the ice was getting heavy. Herman asked Luke to help him get the ice off of the trees. Luke, ever eager to help, came to the rescue and brought a baseball bat. They were able to knock the ice off quickly! Thank you Luke!!

A couple of years ago the General Manager at Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative (where I work) told us that if we weren't being impacted by the economy yet, we should prepare because we would be. WREC is very good to its employees, and is very conscious of keeping costs low to pass savings along to our consumers. This year it was announced that retirement benefits were being changed and that although employees could still retire at age 62, full retirements benefits would begin at age 65. Although I was tempted to be upset, I can't be. I have a good job, and the company is very good to us. I still only work 40 hours a week most weeks, and get regular breaks. God is good all the time!

Natalie and I made a quick trip to see Mandi in May, and Joe and Anne were able to meet us there. Although it was only for a couple of days, it was wonderful to spend time together.

Herman and I made a long weekend trip to see Joe and Anne in their new apartment in Alexandria, Virginia. Now Joe has a much shorter commute, but Anne's commute is much longer. She has a great attitude! She said that she can read/study on the Metro! She will be graduating with her Law Degree in May! This trip we mostly spent time hanging out, watching videos and cooking. The trips are always over so fast, and before we leave the humidity always gets high.

Bill moved from Brandon to Ruskin, and is working for Floor and Decor in Brandon. He started out working part-time, but in less than 90 days he was promoted to floor manager!

God has blessed us with a wonderful family, and I am thrilled and humbled to be loved by each of you. May God bless you all in this Christmas Season and in the coming New Year!

Love,
Herman and Monica

From Natalie and family:

Merry Christmas Everybody!!!

2010 is a year that will go down in the history books as, well, a year of discovery.

Jayden discovered that her new ballet studio (Sally Blackwood) is the best place EVER and she looks forward to her class every week. She reminds us constantly that she was born to dance and loves to entertain! She has recently discovered that writing songs is REALLY fun and she spends time in her room, (and in the car) practicing the songs she is working on. She is in the 1st grade and still ALL girl. The teachers at school call her “Gymboree” due to the fact that is her favorite store and she wants to go whenever possible….I don’t mind going either…lol.

Dylan discovered new heights! After years of not growing…..HE GREW! At 11 years old he is finally wearing a size 8. He is about 4’ 10”. He is discovering what growing pains feel like and how bad they suck. He is in the 5th grade this year and excited that he will be moving on to Middle School next year. He is raising 2 hogs for the fair this year. He is learning that it is hard work, but will pay off in the end if he plays his cards right.

Ty discovered girls, weights, guitars, drums, trucks and the keys to my truck…..go figure….lol. He is in 9th grade this year and having a blast. He is in “pit” in band. Which means he plays the bigger drums and bells on the field for the half time show. He is enjoying his first year of High School, even with all Honors classes. He is looking into wrestling next year….thanks Bill.

Jon is discovering that being a Dad/Stepdad to three VERY active kids is EXHAUSTING!! He is chasing kids at least 4 days a week between band, ballet, 4-H, baseball, and school functions. He also discovered how to function on less sleep than ever. The business was slow this year so thankfully he had the time to do the running without much rearranging.

And me, well, I discovered that when you ignore the signs your body gives you, you get sick. After about 6 months of not feeling “right”, Jon MADE me go to the doctor. I was having issues with losing feeling in my arms and hands, my hands turning blue, and having trouble staying awake or just having energy at all. I was sent to a neurologist and put through a dozen different tests. They did a nerve conduction study…which SUCKED. Something about having 47 electric shocks to each arm, and 6 probes stuck in each hand that just doesn’t feel good. After 9 different blood tests they finally discovered the following…. I have carpel tunnel syndrome in both arms and what they call a critical B-12 deficiency. Normal red meat eating people should have a level between 300-350. They consider 211 low. Death has been reported at 100….mine was 113. Needless to say it freaked us all out a bit. So now I have a handful of meds I take every day along with a shot I give myself every 3 days. They are currently running a few more tests to see why my body no longer holds B-12. I am still with Walgreens and LOVE it!

I want to wish everyone a safe, happy and healthy 2011! Thanks for being a great family!!!
Love you guys!
Natalie, Jon, Ty, Dylan and Jayden

From Mandi and family:

Merry Christmas from the Milam Family,

This year was a very challenging year for my family. I have to remind myself daily that God will only give us as much as we can handle. To quote the famous Marilyn Monroe..."I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together."

May you all have a very Merry Christmas and here's to 2011 being full of love and laughter.

Love,
Mandi, Billy, Lane, Chase and Megan Milam

From Ralph and Paula:

Season's Greetings,

Hope everyone had a good 2010.

The highlights around here involved Paula's parents:

George (Tubbs) had hip replacement surgery (right side) in April, and with a big dose of physical therapy, is doing very well. No limping, so he walks better than he has in a long time. We're all quite pleased to see the vast improvement.

Margie (Tubbs) became very ill in September, and landed in the intensive care unit at the hospital in Zephyrhills for a week. Due to the prayers of many of you, she got the miracle she needed. She remained in the hospital for about another week, then was released to go home. Overall, she's doing well for the shape she's in. Thanks for the prayers you offered up for both of them, it made all the difference.

Paula's office moved to the Kia car dealership in Wesley Chapel this year, and she's very involved there, as well as at the tractor dealerships. Still love's her job (as much as that's possible). In early December they are involved with the Charlie Daniels' The Angelus House fundraiser in Tampa. Big event.

Ralph changed lottery routes, and now covers all of Sumter and most of Hernando Counties. Can leave home a little later, and get home a little earlier. A good thing!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Love to all,
Paula and Ralph

    2010 TIDBITS
Bret

It’s 4 p.m. on a Monday when Bret Denney gets a call from his boss. One of the pigs is in serious trouble.

A veterinary student accidentally castrated a pig with a hernia earlier in the day, and now its intestines are falling out. This happens sometimes when a pig has a weak abdominal wall.

The pig has no name. In agriculture, they never do. It would be too hard to keep track of all the animals. Denney knows the pig as No. 176 by the notches on the ear.

Denney has little time to do something he has never done before. He stuffs the red, mushy intestines in as best he can back up through the tiny laceration and stitches it up. It takes almost 20 minutes because the hole is so small.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this semester always start the same. At 7 a.m., Denney leaves the two-room swine-unit apartment he shares with his good friend Parker Capparelli, also from Dade City. They’re like any other college kids living independently, except they’re in charge of caring for about 450 animals.

The unit is a collection of wooden buildings about seven minutes away from UF’s main campus. Hundreds of pigs, 50 sows, 30 chickens, four boars

and three students call it home.

Denney puts on one of the pairs of rubber boots that are always outside the front door. He can smell the pigs. He can hear the boars. It’s feeding time.

He checks out the mothers and litters to make sure everyone wakes up. If a baby doesn’t wake up when the food is there, it’s usually a sign something is seriously wrong. Today, fortunately, the pigs are fine.

The boars, since there are so few of them, have names. Denney says, “Hi,” to Goliath and Daddy. There’s also Will, a 600-pound, Oreo-colored pig who is the only Hampshire in the unit. The rest are Yorkshires, the typical pale, pink pigs.

Denney is partially responsible for feeding the pigs three to four tons a week. The entire process takes about 30 minutes each morning and afternoon, as long as there’s nothing else to do.

Almost every Monday the veterinary students come to UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences swine-teaching unit to work with the pigs. Some of them look nervous, as if they’re the first live animals they have handled.

Denney envies them. The pigs do not intimidate him because he has enough experience. He has always wanted to be a vet. Always. But he’s worried that just wanting it won’t be enough.

Denney was 4 years old when he showed his first animal for the 4-H Club at the Pasco County Fair in his hometown in Dade City — the type of town where everybody knows everybody. Gossip travels fast, but once people know you, they trust you. Denney is trusted there.

Kids start out showing chicken and bunnies just for fun. At age 8 he started with pigs, buying them young, raising them for six months or so and showing them competitively. Steers and heifers came a few years later. Denney eventually saved enough money selling animals at the fair to start his own herd of about 30 cows.

To be a good showman, you need lots of practice, he said.

“You’re showing the judge your animal; you’re not showing yourself.”

To practice showing, Denney would stand in his backyard with a pig or a cow and one of his parents would be a judge. It’s important to always keep the animal in the judge’s eyesight, so he would pretend a riding lawn mower was the animal, always moving it to keep it in his dad’s sight.

In high school, Denney started to work for Dr. Chet Taylor, a vet who cared for both large and small animals. Taylor had attended UF 30 years before and lived in the swine unit.

For the next five years, Denney learned the ins and outs of veterinary medicine. The vet practice became a second home, and the staff became like family. In between assisting in surgery, taking blood and cleaning teeth, he became confident.

Denney also realized that working with the animals was the easy part. Their owners were another story, especially if the animals were theirs.

“People are much more laid back when it comes to steer and pigs than to cats and dogs,” he said. “It’s a business. I like that.”

So when it came time to leave the practice or stay for another two years of community college, he knew he had to stay. He couldn’t pass up the experience.

He’s got to work on his grades. The classes at Pasco-Hernando Community College were a joke compared to his first UF classes. This is his second crack at organic chemistry, and he is studying earlier and more often.

“There are lots of kids with as much experience as me and probably better grades,” Denney said.

His heart is not set on UF. He will go anywhere that takes him.

One day he wants to move back to Dade City, take over Taylor’s practice and be the town vet.

If he doesn’t get in, he can earn a master’s degree or Ph.D. But it’s not time to think about that now.

He’s got to study.
