1. Casper Joseph (CJ) Nathe, 1C3R. Born on 1 Nov 1866 in New Munich, MN. Casper Joseph (CJ) died in St. Joseph, FL on 26 Jun 1948; he was 81. Citrus grows well in this community of 250 settled in the late 1800s by German Catholics from St. Joseph, Minn. because it likes sandy soil that drains easily, says [Roxine] Barthle. But the popularity of the kumquat, which is native to China, stems from the groves of a man named C.J. Nathe. As the story goes, Nathe became fond of the ornamental kumquat tree while working at a nursery near St. Joseph. In the early 1900s he planted about four acres of kumquats, harvested the fruit for preserves, and gave them away. Nathe soon cultivated his hobby into a profitable business, selling mostly to northern states where the kumquat was in high demand. As other growers learned of his success, they followed suit, and harvesting kumquats became a family pastime while providing supplemental income, just as it does now.1
Casper Joseph (Joe) Nathe was born in New Munich, MN, November 1, 1866. Because of his health, his family moved to Florida in 1887, when Joe was 21 years of age. His parents, Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (DeMarto) Nathe, had eight children: Anna, Casper Joseph, Christopher, Henry, Mary, Anton, John Joseph, and Elizabeth. Anna was married and remained in Minnesota when the family moved to Florida. Henry and John Joseph died at an early age.
After arrival in Florida, the Nathes settled in Chipco, a town with one store and an old freight car for a depot. They bought land and built a home where Gertrude Nathe Gude now lives. Theirs was the first recorded deed in Pasco County. They attended Church in San Antonio. Anton was registered in the first class at St. Leo Military College in 1890 and graduated in the first class in 1892.
Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Nathe had given the material for the church in Meire's Grove, Minnesota where they had lived before coming to Florida. Since there was no church near their home in Florida, they built the Catholic Church. The settlement was named St. Joseph after Joseph Nathe. Joseph died August 4, 1896 at St. Joseph. His wife, Mary Elizabeth, eventually moved back to Minnesota, along with her son Anton. Joe and Chris remained in St. Joseph. Mary married Herman and Elizabeth married Jake Klassen. Both returned to Minnesota.
Mary Elizabeth (Barthle) Nathe was born June 17, 1874, in New Munich, Minnesota. She was one of ten children born to Bernard Andrew and Agnes (Weible ) Barthle: Frank (died at birth), Frank (lived to be 95), Agnes (Buttweiler), Andrew (died at 23 years), Joseph (died at 10 years), Anna (Christ), Mary Elizabeth (Nathe), Mary (Eisele), John, and Walburga (died at 1 year).

She is survived by her husband: Donn Ulrey; her children and their spouses, Virgil Jones (Teri) of San Antonio, Fla., Tommy Jones (Belinda) of Defuniak Springs, Fla., Bobby Jones (Julie) of Jacksonville, Fla., Donnie Jones (Joann) of Darby, Fla., Mark Jones (Monica) of San Antonio, Fla., Shelly Auten (Alan) of Columbia, S.C., Stacy Stevenson (Lance) of Tampa, Fla. and Keith Ulrey (Susie) of Brandon, Fla.; her brothers: Con and Ed Gude, both of St. Joe, Fla., Val Gude of Tampa, Fla. and Tony Gude of Zephyrhills, Fla.; her sisters: Rosalie Ullrich of San Antonio, Fla., Bernadine Roller of Brooksville, Fla., Dottie Arantz of Largo, Fla., and Alice Orlowiz and Theresa Gude, both of Dade City, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Pat Rebel officiating.

I visted Repe, just outside of Helden, which is just a few miles from Olpe, West Germany where the Nate's came from. Yes, it was spelled Nate in the Church records there. I suspect it was changed at the point of imigration. Some of the Nikolai's changed theirs becasue several of them spelled their name Nicholay and the people pronounced it like it looked, ie NIK O LAY. And it was pronounced NIK O LIE. So they changed it. The weird thing is that my great granddad spelled it Nikolai BEFORE he came to this country. Anyway, back to Repe. Olpe was a stop over point for the Bishop of Koln (Cologne). When you travelled around there weren't all the convenience Motels like there are today. So the Bishops built there own ( in this case castles) There is a castle near Olpe. Apparently a lot of the local work depended on the existence of the castle. Great ...grandfather was a forester (whatever that means). I think it means he cut down trees in the forest. After his death, his widow was left with young children to care for and when her daughter in America, ______ Primus (I want to say Catherine and if I weren't so lazy I'd dig around a bit and find it). wrote back to her (probably late 1860 or early 1861) she packed up her kids and went to live near her daughter who by this time was living in Minnesota.14
Many years ago when my great uncle Tony Nathe died, I went to his funeral. It was the middle of winter and I went to the funeral with John and Edna Nathe of St Cloud. It was bitterly cold, 19 below zero and I was the only person who removed his hat at the cemetery. Across the street from the Church is a bar and we all went over there after the funeral. Sounds just like Germany! I'm sure that I must have met Al and Beverly at that time, but I just don't remember. After the freeze of 95 wiped Joe and his sons out down in Fla, Joe died. Funny thing about the Nathes. When the freeze of 72 hit Josie Nathe, he had a heart attack and if it weren't for a wisp of a woman who doubled up her hands into fists and pounded on his chest he'd have died. Josie Nathe was my Uncle Joe. In 1896 after Joseph Nathe died, his widow, Anton and Christopher and some of the Zierdens packed up and went back North. CJ (Casper) had by then married Lizzie Barthle and decided that he wasn't going anywhere. I'll have to get around to all your questions next week. Or I should say the following week. I've got to go to California and train some people. Plan to have supper with Casper Grief while I'm there. If you haven't guessed the Nathe's haven't any imagination when it comes to names. Three guesses who he is named after and the first two don't count! Casper is Aunt Clara's oldest son. Clara and my mother were sisters. And yes Mom is still alive and kicking at 95. That's because she says she does ok as long as she doesn't do anything. And she can't understand why at 71 she can't do more. Actually she did really well this summer and she remembered that she's 94 + . She's decided that she will live to 101. My daughter is trying to talk while I'm typing so I better close this and go. joe15
