"John R. Wehle"
John R. WEHLE, a beloved friend, cherished husband and father, and prominent personality in the water resources management profession, died November 4, 2008, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
He was 57. John dedicated his life to the restoration and protection of Florida' s water resources. He began his 35-year career in water management as a geologist at the Southwest Florida Water Management District in 1973 and served for 15 years as the St. Johns River Water Management District' s assistant executive director until his retirement in 2003. After retiring, he continued his advocacy work for Florida's waters as an environmental consultant. John' s commitment to public service helped lay a foundation for much of today' s state water policy. His passion for Florida' s natural resources led to initiatives to restore the Upper St. Johns River, Lake Apopka and Lake Jesup. He was an influential member of the Florida section of the American Water Resources Association and served as president of the national organization in 1994.
John Wehle, a graduate of the University of South Florida, was born and raised in Tampa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Cecelia Wehle, his brothers, Bernard, Stephen, Carl and Gerald, and his sister, Cecelia.
